Targeting and Ad Networks

Ad Networks and TargetingEvery ad network out there makes some sort of claim that they target the web ads they display on a given website.   But each advertising network uses their own super awesome magic seekrit sauce to provide targeting to one degree or another.  One type of targeting ad networks use is “contextual,” meaning the ads displayed are based on the content on the page itself.  Google’s AdSense network is the most obvious example.  Another popular (and less juggernauty) network is Chitika:  they aggregate the inventory of various affiliate programs and advertisers so that web publishers can just plop in a Chitika web ad on their site and Chitika will match the displayed offers to the content on the site.

It sounds obvious, but it’s often forgotten: targeting is the basis of successful web publishing and web advertising.  Here’s an article on the importance of targeting with regards to website advertising.  Ad networks and website designers use personas to guide targeting and you can use personas to design and market your website.
